◆ Q & A
Q1) Should I contact the professor I prefer to have as my supervisor directly?

A: Yes. Although contacting a professor beforehand will not necessarily improve your chances of being accepted, professors will be honest in informing you of such chances of being accepted. If the professor is unable to take the responsibilities of any more students, he / she will most likely tell you so, and thus prevent you from wasting your time going through the application procedures.

Q2) Can I request the same person to write recommendation letters for my application to The University of Tokyo and to the Embassy of Japan?

A: Yes.

Q3) How can I obtain information about entrance exams?

A: Please refer to the site below and/or consult your prospective supervisor.
http://www.k.u-tokyo.ac.jp/renewal-e/sidebar/exam-e.html

Q4) Can I take the entrance exam before I start receiving my scholarship?

A: Yes. MEXT scholarship applicants need not pay for the entrance examination, but will be required to cover their own travelling expenses to and from the examination site.

Q5) Can I apply for both positions of a research student and a regular student?

A: If the department you are applying to is accepting applications for regular post-graduate students, then you may also apply as a research student. However, if you decide to do so, you must fill out and enclose two (2) separate forms in your application (one form as your regular post-graduate student application, and one form as your research student application).
