MEXT scholarship with Embassy Recommendation for Chinese students

As of June 2016, the application due date to the University of Tokyo for Chinese students has been integrated into the end of August regardless of enrollment timing.

1. What is MEXT scholarship with Embassy Reccomendation

In this category, students must apply to the China Scholarship Council and follow their selection procedures as the preliminary stage. Only those who pass the preliminary stage may proceed to the University selection. ILO will announce information on the University selection procedures on the ILO website in June for both April and September enrollment in the following year. In GSFS, every department and the Graduate Program in Sustainability Science accept students who receive a MEXT scholarship with Embassy Recommendation.

2. Application procedures

Step1: Apply to the China Scholarship Council
Step2: Only those who pass the preliminary selection can apply to GSFS. Application guidelines will be announced on the ILO website in June, and application material submission will be due August.
Step3: Successful candidates will receive an acceptance letter in September from the university.
Step4: MEXT will conduct the final selection and notify the results to GSFS and each applicant in December.
Step5: If applicants successfully go through all selection procedures, applicants can enroll as a research student in April or September in the following year.

3. FAQs

Q1: Should I contact the professor I prefer to have as my supervisor directly?
A1: Yes. Please obtain consent first from the professor(s) to become your supervisor, and send a complete set of application forms with the name of your prospective professor(s).
Q2: I have received consent from more than one professor. What should I do next?
A2: Please decide on one professor as your supervisor before you send ILO your set of application forms. Also please inform all of the professors you have contacted of your decision.
Q3: If I enroll in a department in the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences as a research student, can I automatically matriculate to a doctoral course from the next semester?
A3: No. In order to become a doctoral course student, you must pass the examination of a department you hope to enter. GSFS has entrance examination twice a year, in August and February. If you enroll in September, for example, the first possible entrance examination is in February. If you pass, you can matriculate to a doctoral course in April.
Q4: What if I fail the entrance examination as a research student?
A4: The period that you can stay as a research student varies depending on your situation.
If your field of study is science, you are expected to matriculate within 12 months.
If your field of study is social science you are expected to matriculate within 18 months. Most departments hold entrance examination twice a year, in August and February. In the August, all departments conduct examination and students can take them in English. In the February, fewer departments conduct exams. We suggest you check how many times you can take examinations during the designated period. For details, see here.
Q5: I want to study as a degree student without having been a research student, but the department I want to apply accepts students only as a research student. Aren’t there any other options available?
A5: Apply for a research student status by the end of August in accordance with the guideline. In order to apply for a MEXT scholarship with Embassy Recommendation, you cannot miss this due date. After you receive an acceptance letter in September, you may want to think about taking the examination before your enrollment.
If you pass the entrance examination before your enrollment, GSFS will change your status from “research student” to “degree student” by the time of your enrollment.
Q6: What are the financial differences in taking an exam after I enroll as a research student, and taking it before I enroll?
A6: The two main differences are “examination fee” and “air fare (if it is necessary to come to Japan for exam)”. If you take the examination after you enroll, you will be exempted from paying both. When you take an examination before your enrollment, you must pay “examination fee” and “air fare (if necessary)”.
In GSFS, only two departments (the Department of Human and engineered Environmental Studies, and the Department of International Studies) and the Graduate Program in Sustainability Science – Global Leadership Initiative do NOT require applicants to come to Japan for the examination, and therefore air fare will not be necessary.
Q7: Are there any additional procedures I have to do other than taking the examination to matriculate to a degree course?
A7: Yes, you must apply for extension of your scholarship period after you enroll in the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences. By the time of application you and your supervisor are expected to discuss your study plan to decide when you are going to take entrance examination and which department you are going to apply.
